Veterans Day is a U.S. federal holiday observed annually on November 11 to honor military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It is a day to recognize the sacrifices and contributions of all veterans, both living and deceased, who have defended the country during times of war and peace.
Veterans Day originally began as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I. The armistice between the Allied nations and Germany took effect on November 11, 1918, at 11:00 AM—"the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." In 1938, Armistice Day became a U.S. federal holiday dedicated to the cause of world peace and specifically honoring World War I veterans.
In 1954, following World War II and the Korean War, the U.S. Congress renamed Armistice Day to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars. Unlike Memorial Day, which specifically honors those who died in military service, Veterans Day celebrates all U.S. military veterans, living or deceased.
